From the Streets to Calvary
Redemption in Christ

From a life of drug abuse, Jix found new life in Christ in 1978. By God’s grace, his journey has taken him from the streets to Calvary, where he now serves as a Christian lay speaker. Together with his wife, they own a training consultancy business. He is the author of Chasing the Dragon Out: An Inspiring Story of a Drug Addict’s Altered Destiny.

A LIFE WORTH LIVING

In late December 1977, I was arrested and brought to the police station, where the police took a urine sample for testing. I knew the result would be positive, that my running from the law had come to an end, and that I was heading to prison.

Out of desperation, I called out to God for help and negotiated with Him. I said, “Please change my urine test result from positive to negative, and I will give my life to You and walk with You.” The test result turned out negative.

By the grace and mercy of God, a miracle happened, and I was given a chance at a new life. That was the defining moment of my life. I was spared a conviction and imprisonment, and delivered from the bondage of drugs. Since then, it has truly been a life worth living.

Your lifetime is a finite gift

Psalm 90:12 So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.

This verse reminds us that our lifespan on earth is limited and time is a gift. Despite this, God has plans for us. Let us look at:

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

When I read this verse in 1978, during my first year of relationship with God, my reaction was, “How can someone like me believe in such a verse?” I was a former heroin addict and an odd-job labourer with only a PSLE qualification, poor in the English language, and without a glimmer of hope for the future.

So, understandably, I doubted that my life’s destiny would ever be promising. But one day, it struck me that this verse is an awesome promise God has declared to me – that He is going to perform another miracle with my new lease on life through the plans He has for me.

This verse shows that God is highly intentional and deeply committed to His plans for your future, and He will perform miracles in your life. Therefore, you must also be intentional and committed in planning how to live your life wisely.”
